Engineering and management of the construction of transportation projects is very complex. The growing disparity between the supply and demnad for resources require new advanced tools and techniques to be developed to improve the efficiency of investments. Key innovations are required in the areas of using digital information for delivery of transportation projects, adopting accelerated bridge construction techniques, fostering sustainable practices, and assessing risks and uncertainties in decision-making processes pertaining to the delivery of transportation projects. Our objective in this research thrust is to create innovative solutions for making a paradigm shift in the engineering and management of transportation construction projects.

The project funded by Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP) was started in March 2010 and ended in May 2012. In this project, A quantitative risk-based inspection protocol using risk analysis and probability encoding techniques was created to prioritize the construction activities based on the risk consequences due to missed/reduced inspection. The created protocol would be helpful in reducing the inspection workload/costs while reducing the risks associated with missed/reduced inspection.

The project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ended March 2009. The project assessed different aspects of nighttime construction projects.
Two most important factors considered were safety and productivity in nighttime construction operations. Various factors such as nighttime work zone condition, lighting, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Speed Control Devices, etc. were studied. Among several deliverables of the project, a Decision Support System (DSS) and a Web-based Training Tool were developed. The DSS provides safety recommendations for nighttime roadway projects based on project characteristics and requirements. The web-based training tool is developed to provide nighttime training material to those who have not been involved in nighttime operations. The training tool consists of different training module. Each module focuses on specific aspect of nighttime construction operations. There is a quiz at the end of each module to ensure that a trainee has learned the materials. Training is completed if all the modules are completed successfully.
