Dr. Cheng Zhang - Postdoctoral Associate

Discovery Lead on Disaster Informatics Thrust

Cheng is a Postdoctoral researcher in Civil Engineering. He joined our research group in Spring 2018. He holds a Bachelor degree in Thermos energy and power engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He also obtained his Master degree in Navigation, Guidance, and Control from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He got his Ph.D. degree in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable engineering from Arizona State University. In his spare time (if any :D), he enjoys cooking, music with different genres, and spending time with friends and family.

Dr. Shangjia Dong - Postdoctoral Associate

Discovery Lead on Network Dynamics of Interdependent Systems Thrust

Shangjia is a Postdoctoral researcher in our lab. He received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, minor in Computer Sciences from Oregon State University. Prior to the graduate study, he obtained his dual bachelor degrees in information and computational science and Finance from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. His research interests focus on network robustness, resilience, and interdependency behavior and artificial intelligence in infrastructure. Apart from academia, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and playing tennis.

Chao Fan- Ph.D. Student

Chao is a Ph.D. student in Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the  research group in Fall 2017 and is currently working as a graduate research assistant. Chao received his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering at China University of Mining and Technology and graduated with an Excellent Graduate Award. He has ever received many awards during his undergraduate studies, such as Excellent Thesis Award in National Undergraduate Student Forum in Civil Engineering. He got his Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering at University of California, Davis in one year. His academic interests lie in big data analytics in smart and resilient infrastructure systems, and dynamic network analytics in post-disaster response. In his free time, Chao enjoys reading, swimming and traveling.

Qingchun Li- Ph.D. Student

Qingchun is a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering. He joined the research group in fall 2017 as a research assistant. He holds a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and Master Degree in Structural Engineering from Tongji University. After graduated from Tongji University, he worked as a structural engineer for more than seven years. Qingchun's research interests include community resilience and complex network dynamics. When he is not busy doing research, he enjoys reading, running and classic music.

Amir Esmalian- Ph.D. Student

Amir is a Ph.D. student in construction engineering management at Texas A&M University. He joined the group in Fall 2017 as a research assistant. Amir received his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Sharif University of Technology. His research interests lie in community resilience and infrastructure network dynamics. He hopes his research work could serve people and be a part of the movement toward creating a better world. In his free time, he plays guitar, sings, and he reads poets. 

Jennifer Dargin - Ph.D. Student

Jennifer is a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering. She joined our research group in spring 2019 as a research assistant. She holds a Bachelor degree from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, where she researched public health issues related to water security in the Middle East. Jennifer’s Ph.D. research focuses on human-centric aspects of resilience in infrastructure systems to improve community well-being. When she is not in the lab, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband and their 4 adopted children (3 rabbits and 1 cat), learning languages, and traveling the world.

Hamed Farahmand- Ph.D. Student

Akhil Rajput- Ph.D. Student (Fall 2020)

Akhil will start his Ph.D. in Fall 2020. Prior to his Ph.D., He was an undergraduate student in the Urban Resilience Lab in Summer 2019. He earned his B.S. in civil engineering with honours at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. His research interests lies at the intersection of urban resilience, complex networks, and data science. In his leisure time, he likes to solve the Rubik's cube (2×2, 3×3, 4×4) and play chess.

Tamarah Ridha - Ph.D. Student

Tamarah is a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering Department at Texas A&M University. She joined the research group in Spring 2017. Tamarah completed her Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and Master degree in Structural Engineering at Al-Mustansiryia University in Iraq. She has 1 year of experience as a planning engineer. Tamarah received a scholarship from HCED (Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq) to study a doctoral degree in Construction Engineering and Management in the United States since she was one of the elite students in her country. In her free time, she enjoys reading, watching movies, and painting.

Xinyu (Vincent) Gao- Ph.D. Student

Vincent is a Ph.D. student majoring in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the  research group in Fall 2019 as a research assistant. Gao gained his Bachelor and Master degrees in Civil Engineering at Tongji University at 2016 and 2019. In 2014, he had a non-degree exchange studies experience in Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany. He also has received Study Scholarship during his undergraduate studies. Gao's research areas include complex network modeling and urban informatics for resilience modeling. After working, he enjoys singing and movies.

Natalie Coleman- Ph.D. Student (Fall 2020)

Natalie will start her Ph.D. in Fall 2020 as a NSF Graduate Research Fellow. She is curremtly an undergraduate civil engineering honors student at Texas A&M University. She is interested in learning more about the interaction between the environment and the respective surrounding community. She currently works as a writing consultant for the University Writing Center and is an executive officer for the ASPIRE student organization, which is a mentorship program for incoming freshmen. In her spare time, Natalie enjoys working on her creative writing projects and practicing her singing. 

Hamed is a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the Urban Resilience, Networks, and Informatics Lab  in Fall 2018 and works as a graduate research assistant. Hamed received his bachelor in Civil Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology. He received his Master of Science degree from Sharif University of Technology. His research focuses on urban resilience and modeling complex network of networks. In his free time, Hamed enjoys reading, cooking, and watching movies.

Tianbo Yu- MS Student

Tianbo is a Master student in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the research team in Spring 2019 and works as a graduate research assistant. He received his Bachelor degree in Telecommunication Engineering at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. His research interests lie in Probability Model and Machine Learning. In his free time, Tianbo enjoys cooking and listening to music.

Yang Yang - MS Student

Yang is an undergraduate computer science honors student at Texas A&M University who is interested in data science related researches. Yang has previously worked in Dr. Mostafavi's AggieChallenge team for developing a disaster resilience web-service and is currently working on disaster informatics and community resilience research at the Lab. In his spare time, Yang likes to listen to music and hangout with friends.

Fangsheng Wu- MS Student

Fangsheng is a Master of Science student in Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the research team in Fall 2019 and works as a graduate research assistant. He received his Bachelor degree in Electronic Information Engineering at Wuhan University. His research interests lie in ML approaches on Data Science in interdisciplinary fields. During leasure time, Fangsheng enjoys playing piano, racing driving as well as meditating.

Wanqiu (Fiona) Wang- MS Student

Wanqiu (Fiona) is a Master of Science student in Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. She joined the research team in Fall 2019 and works as a graduate research assistant. She received her Bachelor degree in Electronic Information Engineering at Dalian Maritime University. She is currently working on Complex Modeling research at the Urban Resilience Lab.  In her free time, Wanqiu enjoys traveling around and reading.

Sanghyeon Lee - MS Student

Sanghyeon is a Master of Science student in Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the research group in Spring 2020 as an Aggie Civic Analytics Fellow . He holds a Bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering from Gangneung-Wonju National University where he graduated with honor. During his undergraduate studies, he participated in three ML research and was a teaching assistant in various programming courses. His research interests lie in Explainable AI and data analysis. In his free time, he enjoys trail running and watching movies.

Miguel Esparza - Undergraduate Researcher

Miguel is an undergraduate structural engineering student at Texas A&M University. He is interested in making buildings more resilient towards natural disasters. He currently works for the academic success center as a Supplemental instruction leader and tutor. He is an executive officer for Memorial Student Center Freshmen Leadership International which molds freshmen into global minded leaders and bring international awareness to campus. In his spare time he enjoys going to the movies with friends, reading, and playing video games.

Bora Oztekin - Undergraduate Researcher

Bora is a freshman in the College of Engineering intending to study Computer Science. As he learned more about natural disasters and discovered that relief organizations took great interest in the work of the research group, he was inspired to join the Urban Resilience Lab in Fall 2019. Bora’s research focuses on creating versatile models from our data using data science tools. He is also interested in machine learning and natural language processing and looks forward to being a part of its application in the lab. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, working out, and volunteering.

Evelyn Tang - Undergraduate Researcher

Evelyn is a civic analytic fellow and undergraduate researcher at the Urban Resilience Lab. She is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Applied Math at Texas A&M University. She had an internship in 2019 summer working on a NLP project using machine learning. She is passionate about machine learning and deep learning.

Liam Bessell - Undergraduate Researcher

Liam is an undergraduate computer science student at Texas A&M University and a civic analytic fellow at the Urban Resilience Lab. He has technical interests in computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and software engineering. In his spare time Liam likes to read, run, play video games, and tinker on creative projects.

Sara Garcia- Undergraduate Researcher

Sara is an undergraduate civil engineering & project management student here at Texas A&M University. She began her collaboration with the Urban Resilience, Networks, and Informatics Lab in January of 2020 through her work with Jennifer Dargin, Ph.D. candidate. During that time, she collaborated in disaster data computation and analytics with the social media and well-being disparity group through an AggiE Challenge. She has been involved in the SWELites leadership program and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Her passions include learning new languages, spending time with friends and family, and traveling the world.

Ronald Lee- Undergraduate Researcher

Ronald is a Civil Analytics Fellow and undergraduate researcher in the Urban Resilience Lab. He is currently pursuing a major in Computer Science at Texas A&M University, and has a strong interest in data analytics. His research primarily focuses on building social and spatial networks to map different types of interactions.
In his free time, Ronald likes to read, play guitar, and play basketball

Xin Xiao- Undergraduate Researcher

I am an incoming Master of Engineering student in Computer Engineering this fall. I worked in Dr. Mostafavi's AggieChallenge team in Spring 2020 to produce a web application that integrated and visualized urban flooding data from social media sources. I have technical interests in data analysis, software engineering, and machine learning.

Jared DeLeon- Undergraduate Researcher

Jared is an Undergraduate Computer Engineering student at Texas A&M University and a Civic Analytic Fellow at the Urban Resilience Lab.  He has a strong passion in software engineering, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. He is also a Peer Teacher at Computer Science and Engineering department since Fall 2019 and joined the Urban Resilience Lab in Spring 2020 when he learned about the efforts being made to help our community by doing civic analytics research.
